Amalfi Coast or Sorrento Coast: which one to choose ? ☀️

The Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Coast are two of the most fascinating and iconic coastal destinations in the Campania region of Italy. Visited by millions of tourists each year, they represent the perfect destination to spend your summer vacation relaxing and having fun.

While the two stretches of coastline share many similar features with each other, they have distinctive differences that make them unique. From the high and steep cliffs of the Amalfi Coast overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. To the gentle rolling hills, with panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius, of the Sorrento Coast.

A true paradise on earth worth visiting on one's trip to Campania.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast stretches over a 50-kilometer-long stretch of coastline from Salerno to the rocky ridge of Sorrento.

It embraces the enchanting towns of Positano, Amalfi, Atrani, Ravello, Praiano, Minori, Maiori, Cetara, Vietri sul Mare, Conca dei Marini, and Fiordo del furore. Breathtaking scenery with small, enchanting beaches wedged between steep cliffs, historic gardens, pastel-colored houses climbing sheer above the sea and winding streets.

But also so much history to tell and discover, from Italy's most powerful Maritime Republic, Amalfi, to the city of music, Ravello.

A stretch of coastline with a unique and rare charm, renowned throughout Italy and the world, so much so that it has been named a World Heritage Site.

Known not only for its splendid panorama and history, but also for its delicious cuisine. From fresh fish, such as the renowned Cetara anchovies, to seafood, to Amalfi lemons, known for their size and flavor, used in so many recipes, such as in the famous Limoncello liqueur.

Sorrento Coast

The Sorrento Coast starts in enchanting Vico Equense and ends at Punta Campanella, at the furthest point of the peninsula. It is a gentle and varied landscape with green hills, cultivated plains and panoramic views of Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples. Famous for the beautiful town of Sorrento, after which it is named, with panoramic terraces overlooking the Gulf. To the small towns of Sant'Agnello, Meta di Sorrento, Vico Equense, Massa Lubrense.

A more easily accessible stretch of coastline, well connected by road and rail from both Naples and Pompeii. With less steep and winding coastlines than the Amalfi Coast and wider and more accessible beaches. The Sorrento Peninsula is also famous for its sea caves, thermal baths and fine cuisine. Like the Amalfi Coast, the Sorrento Coast also boasts fine dishes to savor and enjoy.

From gnocchi alla Sorrentina, a delicious first course made with completely handmade tomato and mozzarella pasta. To the ever-present pizza, to lots of sea-flavored dishes, such as fried fish embellished with Sorrento lemon. A combination of unique smells and flavors.

Which to choose between the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Coast

So both the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Coast offer unique and memorable experiences to visitors, each with its own charm and distinctive features. While the Amalfi Coast enchants with its breathtaking beauty, enchanting pastel-colored houses overhanging the sea and its architecture rich in various historic buildings.

The Sorrento Coast attracts with its vibrancy, cultural attractions, accessibility, and equally fascinating history, with origins dating back to Roman times. From ancient Roman villas to the connection with Greek mythology, such as the myth of the Sirens.

So which stretch of coastline to choose if visiting Campania?

If on your trip to Campania you want to visit Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples. I recommend you go to the Sorrento Coast. It is easily accessible not only by train, thanks to the presence of the Circumvesuviana that connects Naples to Sorrento and Pompeii. But also by car, thanks to the presence of wider and less challenging roads compared to the Amalfi Coast.

On the contrary, if you want to enjoy the seascape and coastal landscape and want to spend your summer vacation between the sea and relaxation, then I recommend choosing the Amalfi Coast. Here you will have the opportunity to take wonderful boat trips that allow you to visit enchanting and hidden places. The smells and colors of the Amalfi Coast will remain forever imprinted in your heart and mind.

In addition, the Amalfi Coast is well connected by sea, with ferries linking the various coastal towns and Naples. So if you are not a real expert in driving and do not know how to navigate narrow and winding roads, I recommend you travel to the coast by ferry.
