Do Not Rent a Car on the Amalfi Coast – Unless You’re a Pro at Squeezing Through Millimeters
Thinking of renting a car to explore the Amalfi Coast? Bad idea.
The roads here aren’t just narrow—they’re insanely tight, with sharp curves and sheer drops that leave zero room for error.
Here’s why driving here is NOT for the average traveler:
❌ The Roads Are Extremely Tight – The famous SS163 is barely wide enough for one car in some spots, yet buses, trucks, and scooters all squeeze through at the same time. If you meet a bus on a curve (which you will), you’ll have millimeters of space to maneuver—or risk getting stuck.
❌ Parking Is a Nightmare – If you somehow survive the drive, finding a parking spot is another challenge. Spaces are rare, expensive, and often require expert-level parallel parking skills on steep slopes.
❌Precision Driving Required – If you’re not used to hugging cliffs, reversing on hairpin turns, and squeezing past buses with inches to spare, this is not the place to practice.
✅ Better Option?
✅ Take the Bus – The local SITA buses are frequent and affordable, and the drivers actually know how to handle these roads. Enjoy the views without the stress (but be careful Sita bus during the peak season are packed with tourists and the servce is very poor , you can wait up to 1 hour standing at the bus station under the scorching sun - In low season (quieter streets, cooler air) — the bus is fine.
✅Ferry - they cost more but trust me: in July or August, that ferry ticket is worth every euro.Sea breeze, no pushing, no waiting in the sun.
✅ Rent a scooter
✅ Private transfer
