5 Days on the Amalfi Coast: The perfect plan for first time visitors
The Amalfi Coast is one of those places that lives up to every photo, every postcard, and every dreamy story you’ve ever heard. But here’s the truth: it’s also crowded, curvy, and a bit chaotic — especially in summer.
That’s why I’ve put together this 5-day itinerary to help you enjoy the best of the Coast without rushing, without burning out, and without missing what really matters: the views, the food, the sea, and that feeling of wonder that never quite leaves you while you're there.
Here’s how to spend 5 unforgettable days on the Amalfi Coast — at the right pace, in the right order, with just the right amount of adventure.
✅ Day 1 – Arrive in Positano: Settle In and Take It All In
There’s no better way to start your Amalfi Coast journey than in Positano, the cliffside village that feels more like a dream than a real place. If you're arriving from Naples, your best bet is to get to Sorrento first by train , then continue by ferry or SITA bus.
Leave the car behind — the roads are narrow, parking is expensive, and traffic is no fun. If you want flexibility, rent a scooter instead.
Once you’re in Positano, drop your bags and head straight to the waterfront for that first "wow" moment. The view of the colorful houses tumbling down the hill toward the sea never gets old.
Spend the afternoon exploring the narrow streets, stopping for a lemon granita or to browse handmade sandals and breezy linen clothing. Visit the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the small Roman Archaeological Museum nearby if you have time.
Evening idea: Book a dinner at a panoramic restaurant like La Rada and watch the sun disappear into the sea with a plate of fresh seafood in front of you.
✅Day 2 – Amalfi, Atrani, and Ravello: Three Villages, Three Vibes
Start your day early and hop on a ferry to Amalfi (about 30 minutes from Positano). Once a maritime powerhouse, Amalfi today is a charming town full of history and energy.
Explore the Duomo of Saint Andrew, climb its dramatic staircase, and wander through the old streets. If you have time, pop into the Paper Museum or stroll to the historic Arsenale.
Next, walk to Atrani — it’s literally next door. This tiny fishing village is one of the smallest in Italy, with just one main piazza and a peaceful beach. Perfect for a quiet moment or a seafood lunch away from the crowds. ( iconic film location for : the equalizer with D. Washington and Mr Ripley )
In the afternoon, take a bus or taxi up to Ravello, perched high above the coast. This is where the views get truly jaw-dropping. Visit Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, and take your time soaking in the silence and scenery. The Terrace of Infinity really lives up to its name.
Head back down in the early evening and return to Positano. You'll sleep well tonight.
✅Day 3 – Minori and Maiori: Lemon Paths and Beach Breaks
Time to slow down a bit. Catch a ferry or bus to Minori, a small seaside town with a more local feel. Grab breakfast or dessert at Sal De Riso, one of the coast’s most famous pastry shops, and stroll the waterfront or explore the ancient Roman villa.
Then walk the Sentiero dei Limoni (Lemon Path) + the Lemon farm — a scenic, easy trail that connects Minori to Maiori. It’s a peaceful walk through lemon groves with gorgeous sea views. Takes about 1 hour at a relaxed pace.
In Maiori, unwind on the wide beach, enjoy a laid-back lunch, and maybe rent a paddle boat or take a dip. The vibe here is more low-key, and it’s the perfect spot to rest before heading back.
Return to Positano in time for dinner, or if you want something different, spend the evening in Praiano (just 15 minutes away), where you can catch a beautiful sunset and enjoy a quiet meal by the sea.
✅Day 4 – A Full Day on Capri
Set your alarm and catch one of the first ferries to Capri (about 35 minutes). The earlier you arrive, the more you'll beat the crowds.
Start with a visit to the Blue Grotto, weather permitting. It’s touristy, yes — but the glowing blue water is unforgettable. After that, head up to Anacapri and take the chairlift to Monte Solaro for the best views on the island.
On the way down, visit Villa San Michele, a beautiful home-turned-museum with peaceful gardens and ancient artifacts.
Back in Capri town, walk through La Piazzetta, browse the shops on Via Camerelle, and head to the Gardens of Augustus for another postcard-perfect view — this time of the Faraglioni rocks and the winding Via Krupp.
If you have time before your ferry back, head to Punta Carena Lighthouse for sunset and a drink at the beach bar nearby. It’s one of Capri’s most underrated spots.
✅Day 5 – Cetara, Erchie, and Vietri sul Mare: The Quieter Side
Spend your final day exploring the eastern stretch of the coast, where the crowds thin out and the pace slows.
Start in Cetara, a small fishing village famous for its anchovy sauce (colatura di alici). It’s quiet, authentic, and perfect for a relaxing walk and a truly local lunch — order the spaghetti with anchovy sauce. You won’t regret it.
Next, stop in Erchie, a hidden cove with fewer than 100 residents. It’s tiny, scenic, and a great spot for a swim.
Finish in Vietri sul Mare, the capital of handmade ceramics. Spend your afternoon wandering the narrow streets, popping into artisan workshops, and maybe picking up a piece or two to ship home.
From Vietri, it's a short trip to Salerno, where you can catch a train back to Naples, Rome, or wherever you're headed next.
✅ Few Travel Tips to Make Your Amalfi Coast Trip Easier
❌ Avoid the car. It’s more stress than it’s worth. Use ferries, buses, or rent a scooter.
✅ Hire a private driver to make the most out of your experience ( Amalfi coast tour or Sorrento Coast tour)
✅ Ferries are faster and more scenic than buses in most cases.
✅ Book in advance for beach chairs, dinners, and transfers during peak season.
✅ Pack light, wear comfortable shoes, and bring a light sweater for evenings.
✅ Download offline maps — you’ll lose signal in the hills.
