Herculaneum - The beach that disappeared in a single day. 🌊🌋
Look closely at the bottom half of this photo. That was Herculaneum before 79 AD: a luxury Roman seaside resort where waves lapped right up to the city walls.
Now look at the top half. Today, the sea is over 400 meters (a quarter-mile) away.
When Vesuvius erupted, it didn't just bury the city under 20 meters of volcanic material; it pushed the entire coastline out, forever changing the geography of Campania . Those arches you see down in the "pit"? They were boat houses that opened directly onto the beach. Now, they are far inland.
It’s haunting to stand there today and imagine the sound of waves that used to be right beneath your feet.
❤️ React with a "Heart" if you are fascinated by Roman history. 📌 Save this post for your next trip to Naples and the Amalfi Coast!
