๐ฐ The Secret of the Egg ๐ฅ
Why on earth is it called "The Egg Castle"? ๐ฅ๐ฐ
If you look at the majestic fortress dominating the Bay of Naples, you won't see any egg-shaped towers. So, where does the name Castel dell’Ovo come from?
The answer lies in one of the oldest and most fascinating legends of Italy, involving a poet, a sorcerer, and a fragile object that holds the destiny of the city.
๐ The Sorcerer Poet We know Virgil as the great Roman poet who wrote the Aeneid. But in Neapolitan folklore, Virgil was much more than a writer: he was considered a powerful Magician and Alchemist.
Legend has it that Virgil loved this city so much that he wanted to protect it forever.
๐ฅ The Magic Egg According to the myth, Virgil enchanted a simple egg. He placed it inside a crystal jar, which was then put inside an iron cage, and finally hidden deep within the secret foundations of the castle.
The curse—and the promise—was simple: "As long as the egg remains intact, Naples is safe. If the egg breaks, the castle will collapse, and the city will fell into ruin ."
๐ฑ Panic in the Royal Court This wasn't just a peasant's tale. It was taken incredibly seriously by the intricate politics of the time! In the 14th century, during the reign of Queen Joanna I, a massive storm caused significant damage to the castle.
Panic spread through the streets of Naples. The people weren't afraid of the storm; they were terrified that The Egg had broken. To prevent a revolution and mass hysteria, the Queen had to issue an official decree, swearing that she had personally checked the egg and replaced it!
๐ The Castle Today Standing on the ancient islet of Megaride (where the siren Parthenope is said to have washed ashore), Castel dell'Ovo is the oldest standing fortification in Naples.
It has survived bombardments, earthquakes, and wars. So, perhaps... the egg is still down there, hidden in the dark, doing its job? ๐
