Let me be brutally honest with you as a local who lives and works here: That is 100% FALSE. 🛑🍝🍷
Let's clear up the biggest misunderstanding right now: The "Coperto" (cover charge) you see on your receipt is NOT a tip. 🧾❌ That €2, €3, or sometimes €5 charge goes straight to the restaurant owner. It pays for the bread basket, the tablecloth, the laundry service, and washing your dishes.
But the hardworking waiter who just ran up and down 150 steep stone steps in the Amalfi Coast heat? The server navigating the endless, exhausting staircases of Naples with a tray full of hot pizzas? Or the bartender hustling through the narrow, scorching, crowded alleys of Puglia to bring you that perfect Aperol Spritz? They see absolutely ZERO cents of that Coperto. 🤯🍹🏃♂️
Does Italy have a mandatory 20% tipping culture like the US? No. You will not be chased down the street if you don't tip. The police won't arrest you.
