❤️The Secret Love Affair That Birthed Italy’s Most Famous Chocolate π«π
If you're planning a trip to Italy, you’ll probably taste a Bacio Perugina at some point—that delicious hazelnut chocolate with a romantic quote tucked inside. But before you take a bite, you NEED to know the unbelievable true story behind it! π✨
It all starts in the 1920s with Luisa Spagnoli, an absolute boss and a visionary Italian entrepreneur way ahead of her time. Not only was she the co-founder of the Perugina chocolate factory, but she was also a pioneer for women's rights—creating one of Europe's first in-factory nurseries so her female workers could stay close to their babies! πΆπ (And yes, she's the exact same woman who later founded the famous Italian fashion brand! π).
In 1922, trying to reduce waste in her factory, Luisa had a stroke of genius. She gathered leftover chopped hazelnuts, topped them with a whole toasted hazelnut, and covered it all in rich dark chocolate.
Because of its stubby, irregular shape, she originally called it Cazzotto (which literally means "Punch"). π₯
Here’s where the drama and romance begin! Giovanni Buitoni—the co-founder's son and Luisa's secret lover—thought offering someone a "punch" wasn't very elegant. So, he renamed it to something much sweeter: Bacio (Kiss)! π
And those famous love notes inside? π They were inspired by Luisa and Giovanni's actual habit of exchanging secret love messages by hiding them inside chocolates during work hours! The company's art director, Federico Seneca, loved the idea so much that he made it a permanent feature, along with the iconic silver wrapper and blue starry sky. π✨
Next time you are strolling through the vibrant streets of Naples or taking in the breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast, grab a Bacio and remember the badass woman and the secret romance that started it all! π
π Tell us below: Have you ever tried a Bacio? What is the most beautiful phrase you've ever found inside?
