The new systems are here, but they are absolutely manageable. Let’s break down exactly what to expect, step-by-step, so you can head to the airport feeling 100% confident and relaxed! ✨
💻 First, What Exactly is the EES?
The EES is a new digital system for non-EU citizens traveling into the Schengen area. Instead of border guards manually stamping your passport every single time, the system registers your entry and exit digitally using biometric data (scanning your face and fingerprints at a kiosk).
👻 Is it scary? Not at all! It's just like using the automated gates you might have seen before. ⏳ Does it take longer? The first time you register, it might add a minute or two, but airports have installed dozens of kiosks to keep the lines moving steadily. The staff is there to guide you! 🚶♂️➡️🚶♀️
⏰ The Golden Rule: When Should I Arrive?
The absolute sweet spot for Italian airports is: Arrive 2.5 to 3 hours before your flight. Why not 4 or 5 hours? Because your airline's check-in and bag drop desks will not be open yet! 🧳 Arriving too early just means you will be standing in the departure hall waiting for the staff to arrive.
📍 Where to Find Passport Control in Italy's Main Airports:

🍕 Naples Capodichino (NAP): Naples is compact, but because it's so busy, knowing where to go is key! 📍 Location: After you pass the main security screening on the first floor, you will be directed to walk through a large Duty-Free shop. 🚶♂️ The Walk: Keep walking past the shops and restaurants. You need to look up and follow the yellow/black signs specifically for the C Gates (Extra-Schengen departures). 🛂 The Checkpoint: Passport control and the EES kiosks are located exactly at the entrance of the C Gates concourse. It might look like a tight bottleneck when you approach it, but don't panic! The lines move. Once you clear this checkpoint, you are in the dedicated Extra-Schengen waiting area right next to your boarding gate!
🏛️ Rome Fiumicino (FCO): Fiumicino is huge, but brilliantly organized. Most non-Schengen flights depart from Terminal 3. 📍 Location: After checking in at T3, you will go through a massive, highly efficient security area. 🚶♂️ The Walk: You will walk through a massive luxury shopping mall. Look for the overhead signs pointing to the E Gates (specifically E11-E24 or the E31-E44 satellite). 🛂 The Checkpoint: The passport control plaza is gigantic and located right after the shopping area, right before you enter the E Gates zone. If your flight is at gates E31-E44, you will clear passport control first and then take a quick, automated train to your gate.
🖼️ Florence Peretola (FLR): Florence is a very small, single-terminal airport. 📍 Location: Drop your bags on the ground floor and head straight to security. 🛂 The Checkpoint: Because it's so small, passport control is located immediately before the specific non-Schengen boarding gates. You simply follow the signs for Extra-Schengen departures at the end of the hall, and the booths are right there.
👔 Milan Linate (LIN): Linate is known as the "city airport" and mostly handles domestic and EU flights, but it does have non-Schengen flights (like to the UK)! 📍 Location: You check in on the ground floor, then head up to the first floor for security (they have amazing new scanners where you don't even need to take liquids out!). 🚶♂️ The Walk: After security, you will walk through the main shopping and dining area. 🛂 The Checkpoint: Follow the signs for the Extra-Schengen gates (usually around gates A17-A21). The passport control area is clearly marked and located just before you enter this specific boarding lounge.

You now have over an hour to relax at your gate, grab an espresso, and wait for boarding.
