๐Ÿšจ 30 HUGE Mistakes Tourists Make in Naples (And How to Avoid Them!) ๐Ÿšจ

๐Ÿšจ Don't Ruin Your Naples Trip! 30 Rookie Mistakes You MUST Avoid (Local Secrets Inside!) ๐ŸŒ‹๐Ÿคซ

1️⃣ Only Staying for One Day Many treat the city as a quick stopover for Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast. You need at least three days to truly experience the magic, history, and street food of our vibrant streets!

2️⃣ Falling for the "Dangerous City" Myth This city is as safe as any major European destination. Keep an eye out for pickpockets in crowded places, but do not let outdated rumors ruin your adventure.

3️⃣ Ordering a Cappuccino After Lunch In Italy, milk-based coffees are strictly for breakfast! If you need a caffeine boost in the afternoon, always ask for a simple, strong espresso.

4️⃣ Eating Pizza with a Knife and Fork (All the Time) While you can use cutlery sitting down, the authentic local way to eat pizza on the go is folded into four—known as "a portafoglio."

5️⃣ Not Validating Your Transport Ticket Always remember to stamp your ticket in the yellow machines before boarding. Unvalidated tickets will lead to hefty fines from inspectors! For a seamless experience, use the official UNICO CAMPANIA app.

6️⃣ Expecting Tap Water at Restaurants At restaurants, you will be served bottled mineral or still water. Tap water is rarely offered or requested at dining establishments here.

7️⃣ Waiting in Line for Major Sites The historical center gets incredibly busy! Book your tickets in advance for places like the Sansevero Chapel or Pompeii to skip the massive lines.

8️⃣ Taking Taxis Without Checking the Fare Always ask the driver to use the meter, or request the fixed pre-determined municipal rate before getting into the car to avoid surprises.

9️⃣ Skipping the Underground Layers The city is built on layers of history. You absolutely cannot leave without exploring the fascinating world beneath the surface! You must visit Napoli Sotterranea, the incredible La Napoli Sotterrata (the ancient Roman ruins beneath San Lorenzo Maggiore), the hauntingly beautiful Cimitero delle Fontanelle, and the spectacular Catacombs of San Gaudioso & San Gennaro.

๐Ÿ”Ÿ Only Eating Pizza Yes, the pizza is the best in the world, but do not miss out on traditional ragรน, genovese pasta, sfogliatella, baba, and the ultimate Neapolitan delight: the "Fiocco di Neve" (Snowflake) from Poppella pastry shop—an absolute delirium of taste! The gastronomy here is endless!

1️⃣1️⃣ Renting a Car for City Exploration Driving in the traffic here is chaotic and parking can be very tricky. Rely on walking, the metro, or private drivers instead. Save yourself the stress!

1️⃣2️⃣ Looking for "Fettuccine Alfredo" or "Chicken Parmigiana" Looking for fettuccine Alfredo, pasta with meatballs, or chicken parmigiana? These are American-Italian inventions, an absolute blasphemy here! ๐Ÿคฃ Stick to authentic local dishes at traditional trattorias for the real culinary experience.

1️⃣3️⃣ Packing Heavy Luggage The historic center is filled with cobblestones, narrow alleys, and staircases. Travel light, or you will be exhausted dragging a heavy suitcase around.

1️⃣4️⃣ Ignoring the "Piano Piano" Lifestyle Do not rush! The true beauty of your trip is found in slow travel. Take a moment to enjoy the espresso rituals and watch the world go by.

1️⃣5️⃣ Forgetting Small Cash for Street Vendors While cards are widely accepted now, you still need coins and small bills for street food, tipping, and browsing local markets in the lively Pignasecca area.

1️⃣6️⃣ Missing the Amalfi Coast Ferry (And Not Booking Round Trips!) If you want to explore the coast, ferries are the best way to avoid traffic. However, you MUST absolutely buy a round-trip ticket in advance! Tickets sell out incredibly fast, and you do not want to be left stranded. You will find the link to book your tickets safely in the first comment!

1️⃣7️⃣ Not Knowing How to Use a Bar Restroom Need to use the restroom while exploring? Don't just walk in! The local etiquette is to buy a quick espresso at the counter or a small bottle of water, and pay with small bills. This way, you will get small coins as change, which are incredibly useful for leaving small tips around the city!

1️⃣8️⃣ Going to the Islands or Coast on a Weekend If you plan to visit Capri, Ischia, Sorrento, or the Amalfi Coast, do it early in the week! Weekends are overwhelmingly crowded. While in Capri, taking the chairlift is an absolute must—the views are worth it! However, if you want to see the Blue Grotto, be prepared for very long lines and waiting in the scorching sun for quite some time.

1️⃣9️⃣ Not Watching Your Bag in Crowds (And Wearing Flashy Jewelry) Just like in any major global city, it is always best to blend in and be smart. Keep your belongings secure by using a crossbody bag worn in the front, especially in busy areas, and avoid backpacks with easily opened zippers. As a wise piece of advice, leave your heavy gold jewelry or expensive luxury watches at home or in the hotel safe. There is no need to worry or be alarmed, just practice common sense to ensure a carefree and wonderfully safe trip!

2️⃣0️⃣ Wearing Flip-Flops to Ruins & Falling for Street Traps Do not wear flip-flops or open sandals to walk around the city, and absolutely never wear them to Pompeii, Herculaneum, or Mount Vesuvius—you need sturdy walking shoes! Also, never stop for street vendors trying to hand you socks or red lucky horns (corni). Finally, NEVER drink the famous "limonata a cosce aperte" from shady mobile carts on the street; they will ask you for €5, which is totally out of the market, the hygiene is zero, and they are highly unadvisable! If you really want to try it, go to the authorized kiosks, like the one at Piazza Trieste e Trento n. 4—it is authentic and the legal, normalized cost is €2.50!

2️⃣1️⃣ Skipping the MANN Museum After the Ruins After visiting Pompeii or Herculaneum, you must visit the MANN (National Archaeological Museum of Naples) to complete your historical and cultural experience! This is where you will find all the authentic ruins, statues, and stunning mosaics excavated from the Roman cities.

2️⃣2️⃣ Ordering "Tourist" Pizzas If you want a truly authentic Neapolitan pizza experience, stick to the basics! The base pizzas—Margherita and Marinara—are always the best way to taste the quality. Avoid overly complicated, super-decorated pizzas; those are just frills meant for tourists.

2️⃣3️⃣ Buying Bottled Water Everywhere The tap water in Naples is delicious, ice-cold, and fresh from the source! It comes directly from the historic Serino aqueduct, which brings pure mountain water right to the city. Always bring a reusable bottle with you. The best and freshest public fountain to fill up is located at Piazza del Gesรน, right at the corner by the tourist info point!

2️⃣4️⃣ Rushing Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Vesuvius in One Day Never try to squeeze both Pompeii and Herculaneum into a single day! Dedicate your time to breathe in the history the right way. Choose one or the other on separate days to truly enjoy them. However, if you absolutely must combine two historical icons in one day, the best and most acceptable way is to start very early in the morning at Mount Vesuvius (with tickets booked well in advance!), and then head down to visit Pompeii or Herculaneum. If you can, reserve a private guide for a minimum two-hour tour. Large groups of 30 people are not ideal for a TRUE experience. If you are interested, contact me via DM to reserve an expert, professional guide who will take you on a UNIQUE historical journey, not just recite stories!

2️⃣5️⃣ Ordering an "American Coffee" When you go to a local bar, you need to know the top 3 coffees drank by locals! ☕ Caffรจ Espresso: The classic, strong, short shot. ☕ Caffรจ Schiumato: An espresso topped with a delicious dollop of hot, frothy milk foam. ☕ Caffรจ Macchiato: An espresso "stained" with just a tiny drop of warm milk. Whatever you do, do NOT ask for a large, watered-down "American Coffee" (Starbucks style)... because the barista will give you a very bad look! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ‘€

2️⃣6️⃣ Speaking Ill of Maradona Diego Maradona is considered an absolute deity here, right alongside our patron saint, San Gennaro! If you want to instantly connect with locals and be loved wherever you go, the magic phrase to say when entering a place is "FORZA NAPOLI!". You will see people smile, some might even hug you, and they will ALWAYS reply "SEMPRE!". I guarantee you will get a huge bonus of respect; it is our way of saying "you are one of us." This is a piece of advice only a true Neapolitan can give you! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’™

2️⃣7️⃣ Skipping the Authentic "Pizza Fritta" To live a true Neapolitan experience, you must taste the Fried Pizza! You can order it "completa" (complete) with pork cracklings (cicoli), or just with provola cheese, ricotta, black pepper, and tomato (my absolute favorite!). Historically, after WWII, fried pizza was made by women in the "bassi" (the ground-floor street-level apartments) on Saturdays and Sundays to help the family economy. It represented the "pizza of the poor" because the ingredients were cheap, and frying it in oil was more accessible than using a wood-fired oven. After this culinary experience, you will understand what I mean and you will thank me!

2️⃣8️⃣ Forgetting a Cover-Up for Churches Naples has over 500 stunning historical churches! Always carry a light scarf or extra layer with you to cover your shoulders and legs if needed. It is essential to respect the sacred places and the local Christian culture when entering to admire these breathtaking religious and architectural sites.

2️⃣9️⃣ Buying the Lucky Red Horn (Corno) for Yourself You will see these iconic red horns everywhere, but never buy one for yourself! According to our ancient traditions, the "corno" must be gifted to you by someone else (and you can buy it to gift to others). If you buy it for yourself, it loses all its magical, esoteric, and protective powers! Also, only buy them from official artisan shops, never from unauthorized street vendors.

3️⃣0️⃣ Overpaying for Public Transport Listen to your friend SAL: I often see tourists buying the €1.50 paper tickets for everything, AND IT IS A MISTAKE! The ticket for Metro Line 1 is €1.50, but the ticket for the Funicular to reach the Vomero district is only €1.30! Don't get confused and pay €1.50 for the funicular. Alternatively, use the Tap In / Tap Out system with your contactless card at the turnstiles—I use it all the time and it is incredibly convenient!
