8 Things I Would NEVER Do in Italy as an Italian! 🇮🇹🍝
1️⃣ Never drive a scooter or motorbike through the major cities 🛵 It looks extremely romantic in the movies, but driving in places like Rome or Naples is chaotic and requires advanced local reflexes! The traffic is heavy, local drivers are fast and unpredictable, and there are countless restricted driving zones (ZTL) that will result in massive fines if you enter them. Stick to walking or public transit to save your sanity! 🚌🚦
2️⃣ Never walk around without cash in your wallet 💶 While credit cards and digital payments are becoming much more common, cash is absolutely still king in many everyday situations. If you want to grab a quick €1.20 espresso at a local bar, buy fresh fruit from a street vendor, or leave a small tip, you will need coins and small bills. Always keep some Euros handy! ☕🪙
3️⃣ Never show up for dinner at 6:00 PM 🍽️🕖 In Italy, our culinary clock runs much later than in many other countries! If you try to go to a traditional restaurant for dinner at 6:00 PM, you will likely find the doors locked or the staff eating their own meal. Authentic places rarely open their kitchens before 7:30 PM or 8:00 PM. Enjoy an aperitivo with an Aperol Spritz instead while you wait for the real dinner time! 🍹🍕
4️⃣ Never assume the "Coperto" is a tip for the waiter 🍽️💶 Many visitors see the "coperto" (cover charge) on their restaurant bill and mistakenly think the tip is already included. It is absolutely not! The coperto is an ancient Italian tradition that covers the cost of the bread basket, the table setting, the linens, and washing the dishes—this money goes directly to the restaurant, not the staff. While tipping is not strictly mandatory in Italy like it is in the US, leaving a tip is a wonderful act of human kindness and gratitude for good service. 6️⃣ Never go out for dinner without a reservation 🍝 The best and most authentic Italian restaurants are usually small and fill up incredibly fast, especially from Thursday to Sunday. If you just show up hoping for a table, you will likely be turned away or forced to eat at an expensive "tourist trap" with lower food quality. Always call ahead or use an app to book your table! 🍷📝
7️⃣ Never walk around with sandals all day 🩴 Our historic cities are incredibly beautiful but paved with uneven cobblestones and traditional "sampietrini". Walking in sandals or flip-flops for hours will quickly ruin your feet, legs, and back. Always opt for stylish but comfortable walking shoes or sneakers if you want to survive a full day of sightseeing! 👟🏛️
8️⃣ Never forget to validate your public transport ticket 🚆 Buying a physical ticket is not enough to ride legally; you must validate it! Before stepping onto a regional train, or immediately after boarding a local bus, you must find the small machine to stamp the date and time on your ticket. Ticket inspectors are very strict, and saying "I didn't know" will not save you from a heavy fine! 🎫👮♂️
