NAPLES: THE ULTIMATE 3-DAY ITINERARY TO EXPERIENCE THE TRUE MAGIC OF THE CITY! ๐๐๐️
๐บ️ ✨ In this itinerary, you will find what to visit, where to eat pizza, the most authentic restaurants + the top spots for an aperitivo! ๐๐๐ธ
☀️ DAY 1: THE BEATING HEART OF THE HISTORIC CENTER Wake up very early to fully enjoy the magic of the city without the crowds!
๐️ We start right away by walking along the famous Spaccanapoli! It is an ancient street of Greek origin that literally cuts the city center in two with a perfectly straight line. It is the true beating heart of Naples, an open-air museum full of churches, historic buildings, scents, and local life.
๐ผ Strolling along, we will reach the magical Via San Gregorio Armeno. This is famous worldwide as "the street of nativity scene makers". Here, in ancient artisan workshops, Neapolitan master craftsmen hand-make, all year round, incredible terracotta figurines that mix sacred tradition with famous contemporary figures!
๐ฉธ While on San Gregorio Armeno, I highly recommend entering the wonderful Church of Santa Patrizia before 10:00 AM, considered the true gem of Neapolitan Baroque. Here rests Santa Patrizia, the co-patron saint of Naples: every Tuesday, and especially during her feast day on August 25th, the faithful witness the prodigious miracle of the liquefaction of her blood!
๐จ Leaving the church, we retrace our steps towards Spaccanapoli to admire the gigantic and iconic San Gennaro Mural. This imposing work of street art was created by the famous international artist Jorit. You will notice that the Saint's face has two deep red marks on his cheeks: they are the "tribal" cuts that the artist uses on all his portraits to symbolize the belonging of every individual to the one great human tribe.
๐ฟ We continue towards the San Severo Chapel to admire the mysterious and fascinating works conceived by the brilliant and controversial Prince Raimondo di Sangro. In the center triumphs the Veiled Christ, a marble sculpture so realistic that it seems covered by a true, impalpable veil. The perfection of this work generated dark legends according to which the Prince used alchemy to "marbleize" a real piece of fabric! ๐ง I absolutely recommend getting an audio guide or booking a tour to fully understand its magic.
๐️ Attention: it is one of the most visited museums in the world! Book your tickets many days in advance. (Check our links in the comments for skip-the-line tickets, it's almost impossible to get in by buying them at the entrance!).
๐ Lunch break with the Queen of street food! Let's go to La Figlia del Presidente to taste an incredible Pizza Fritta (Fried Pizza). It is the favorite street food of Neapolitans: a super soft disc of dough, traditionally stuffed with ricotta and pork cracklings, then deep-fried in boiling oil until golden and crispy on the outside, and stringy on the inside! ๐ ๐ La Figlia del Presidente ๐งญ Via del Grande Archivio, 24
๐ฆ Right after, we walk towards Napoli Sotterranea (Naples Underground). It is an incredible journey 40 meters below ground to explore the dense network of ancient Greco-Roman aqueducts, later used by the population as huge air-raid shelters during the bombings of World War II. ๐️ (Here too, I highly recommend buying skip-the-line tickets online from our links in the comments to avoid very long lines!).
๐ง After exploring the underground, we deserve a sweet break! Let's go taste the best Babร in the city. The babร is a super soft, mushroom-shaped leavened cake, generously soaked in a rum syrup. It literally melts in your mouth! ๐ ๐ง Pasticceria Capparelli ๐งญ Via dei Tribunali, 327
๐บ Refreshed, let's go discover the San Lorenzo Maggiore Complex. Entering the majestic Gothic church, you go underground to walk inside the ancient Macellum, a true Greco-Roman era market perfectly preserved, walking on the ancient paved streets! ๐️ (Buy tickets online through our links!).
๐ท In the evening, we relax with a fantastic aperitivo in a cozy place full of atmosphere! ๐ ๐ท Buco Pertuso ๐งญ Via Giovanni Paladino, 21
๐ For dinner, we move just a few steps away for a triumph of tradition! ๐ ๐ Locanda del Gesรน Vecchio ๐งญ Via Giovanni Paladino, 26 Attention: they prepare every authentic dish of Neapolitan cuisine flawlessly, but it is absolutely mandatory to book a few days in advance, otherwise you will never find a table!
⛪ DAY 2: RIONE SANITร AND THE MONUMENTAL DUOMO We leave early to explore the northern part of the city!
๐ We start the morning by going down into the Catacombs of San Gaudioso and San Gennaro. They are evocative and vast early Christian underground cemeteries, rich in frescoes, mosaics, and ancient history, located in the heart of the authentic Rione Sanitร . ๐️ (Buy your tickets in advance using our link in the comments!).
๐️ Emerging from the catacombs, we immerse ourselves in the alleys of the Sanitร neighborhood. We make a mandatory stop in front of the wonderful Palazzo dello Spagnolo. It is one of the greatest masterpieces of Neapolitan Baroque architecture, famous for its spectacular and monumental open "double-flight" staircase, which creates a breathtaking perspective and theatrical effect!
❄️ Now we stop to spoil our palate by tasting the famous Fiocco di Neve (Snowflake). It is a super soft ball of brioche dough, dusted with powdered sugar and filled with an incredibly light and secret cream made from milk and sheep's ricotta. It is an explosion of goodness! ๐ ๐ฅ Pasticceria Poppella ๐งญ Via Arena della Sanitร , 29
๐จ๐จ Right after, we go to admire the sculptures of the Jago Museum. Jago is a young and extraordinary contemporary artist, who with his exceptional technical skills has been dubbed the "new Michelangelo". ๐️ (You can find entrance tickets in our links!).
๐ We then go down towards Via Duomo to visit the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Duomo of Naples. Inside, Gothic, Baroque, and Neo-Gothic styles blend together. Absolutely a must-see is the sparkling Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, covered in frescoes and silver, the core of Neapolitan spirituality: it is here that three times a year the faithful gather anxiously awaiting the miracle of the melting of the Saint's blood! Before leaving, we go up to visit the Roofs of the Duomo, a recently opened path that offers a crazy view from above over the whole city.
๐ธ Aperitivo time! This time we move to a magical place with a fantastic atmosphere: an old bookstore full of dusty volumes that turns into a refined cocktail bar in the evening. ๐ ๐ธ Libreria Berisio ๐งญ Via Port'Alba, 28/29
๐ For dinner, we stay true to the real local flavors by tasting fabulous pasta and home cooking in a historic trattoria frequented only by locals (no tourist trap!). ๐ ๐ Ristorante Al 53 ๐งญ Piazza Dante, 53
๐ DAY 3: ELEGANCE, CASTLES, AND BREATHTAKING VIEWS We head out very early!
๐️ Today we walk along the elegant Via Toledo and then stop for a royal breakfast, admiring the luxurious Belle รpoque style interiors of the most famous cafรฉ in the city. Sitting here means breathing history: immense international artists like Oscar Wilde, Ernest Hemingway, Jean-Paul Sartre, Gabriele D'Annunzio, and the great Matilde Serao sat at its tables to write their works! ๐ ☕ Gran Caffรจ Gambrinus ๐งญ Via Chiaia, 1/2
⚓ Leaving the cafรฉ, the immense and majestic Piazza del Plebiscito opens up before us. From here we take Via Chiaia, arriving at the beautiful Piazza dei Martiri. Chiaia is the most elegant and sophisticated district of the city, full of high fashion boutiques, ancient noble palaces, and a unique aristocratic atmosphere born at the end of the 19th century.
๐ฐ From Piazza dei Martiri we walk down Via Calabritto until we reach the splendid Lungomare (seafront). Walking a step away from the waves, we arrive at the imposing Castel dell'Ovo. This is the oldest castle in Naples, founded on the islet of Megaride, the exact place where the Greeks landed to found the first city. We stroll along the picturesque Borgo Marinari at the foot of the castle, a romantic and ancient little fishing port full of charm. And remember the legend: it is said that the Roman poet Virgil, considered a magician, hid a magic egg in the dungeons of the castle. As long as the egg remains intact, the city of Naples will be protected from any catastrophe!
๐ We head back towards Via Toledo to take the Funicular at Piazzetta Duca d'Aosta. The funicular is a characteristic and fast cable train that glides up the tracks, connecting the historic center to the highest districts in just a few minutes.
๐ฐ Reaching the top, we get to Castel Sant'Elmo! Walking on the roof of this immense star-shaped fortress, you can enjoy the most beautiful and breathtaking panorama in the world: a 360-degree view where you can admire the Gulf, Capri, Sorrento, Mount Vesuvius, all the way to the Capodimonte district, and even notice the perfect line of Spaccanapoli cutting through the roofs from above!
๐ณ Coming down from the castle, we take a walk in the Vomero. This is the chicest hilly district of Naples, characterized by elegant tree-lined avenues, Art Nouveau style buildings, tranquility, and elegant pedestrian streets perfect for shopping.
๐ป We take the funicular again to go back down to the historic center. It's time for a lively and alternative aperitivo, in a very cute place specialized in craft beers, great wines, and an atmosphere full of life! ๐ ๐ป Oak ๐งญ Vico della Quercia, 10
๐ For our last dinner, we have chosen an authentic restaurant (no tourist traps!) with a warm atmosphere, a stone's throw from Via Mezzocannone.๐ ๐ท Taverna dell'Arte ๐งญ Rampe San Giovanni Maggiore, 1 . Alternatively, if you are craving an amazing pizza, you can also try ๐Pizzeria 22 ๐ ๐ Via Pignasecca 22
