🚫 15 MISTAKES I MADE ON THE AMALFI COAST (SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO)

Let me save you stress, money, and possibly a herniated disc. I learned these lessons the hard way... here is everything I did wrong, so you can do it right.

🚗 1. I drove myself. Big mistake. That road isn’t "scenic"—it’s a survival test. Cliffs on one side, buses inches from your mirror on the other. Unless you have nerves of steel, skip the drama.

🚫 2. I didn’t know the License Plate Rule. Did you know plates control when you can drive? Odd plate on odd date? BANNED. Even plate on even date? BANNED. Break the rule? You get fined €500. Not worth it.

🅿️ 3. I thought parking would be easy. Spoiler: It doesn’t exist. I found a spot at Luna Rossa (carved into a rock) for €5/hour or €45/day. But strict check-out times, height limits, and confusing rules turned it into a logistical maze.

🧳 4. I booked a hotel inside a ZTL (Restricted Zone). Google Maps said "5 minutes away." It didn't mention the 900 uneven stone steps. Dragging luggage uphill in the heat made me look like I had climbed Vesuvius.

🥵 5. I went in July. I expected a vacation; I got a heatstroke simulator. 38°C, packed streets, and half of Europe squeezing past you. Pro Tip: Go in late September. The weather is perfect, and you can actually breathe.

🏡 6. I stayed in Amalfi Town. Beautiful, but chaotic and expensive. I should have based myself in Sorrento (or even Naples!) and used ferries to explore. It’s strategic, outside the ZTL madness, and way more relaxing.

🏖️ 7. I tried to relax at the main beach. Marina Grande is right next to the ferry dock—meaning it’s loud, crowded, and not peaceful. Next time? I’m heading to Maiori or Minori for space or the hidden cove of Erchie for magic.

🚌 8. I relied on the bus. Since I couldn't drive, I waited by the roadside. Five flew past me full. The one that stopped was a sauna on wheels. It took an hour to move 5km. Honestly? I would have paid double for a private transfer just to have AC and a seat.

🛥️ 9. I didn't rent a boat. The biggest regret. The Coast is meant to be seen from the water. You can rent a small dinghy without a license—no traffic, just cliffs and freedom.

👠 10. I wore the wrong shoes. Flip-flops and cute wedges? Useless. This region is made of steep stairs and slippery cobblestones. By day one, I had blisters. Pack real walking shoes or suffer!

🎟️ 11. I didn't book my boat tickets in advance. I thought I could just show up at the port. Nope! Tickets sell out incredibly fast in high season. 💶 12. I didn't carry enough cash. I assumed everywhere would take cards, but I quickly realized that for small purchases like a fresh lemon granita on the side of the road, tipping, or quick bus tickets, cash is king. Some smaller vendors don't even have POS machines. Always keep some small Euro bills on you!

📝 13. I thought I could just "wing it" for dinner. The best restaurants? Booked weeks in advance during the summer. If you don't have reservations, get ready to eat a sad, overpriced sandwich while watching other people enjoy fresh seafood.

🚶‍♂️ 14. I tried to walk between towns on the main road. I looked at the map and thought, "Oh, it's just a short walk." What the map didn't tell me? There are NO sidewalks. You are literally hugging a cliff wall while Vespas fly past your nose. Take the ferry or stick to the designated hiking trails like the Path of the Gods instead.

🚕 15. I assumed taxis would be cheap. I hopped in a cab for a quick 15-minute ride and almost cried when they asked for €80 to €100. Taxis here are a luxury service, not public transit. Always agree on the price first, or better yet, pre-book a private transfer before you arrive!
