๐ค 23 Things Tourists Do That Silently Break Italian Hearts ๐๐ฎ๐น
Friendly warning: this list is entirely playful! It's your vacation, so absolutely order what you crave, sip whatever you prefer, and make the most of your Italian getaway. But if you want a peek at the quirky things that make Italians internally scream... keep reading! ๐๐
1. Thinking the "Coperto" is a tip (and leaving nothing!) ๐ถ๐ฝ️ Many visitors see the coperto (cover charge) on their receipt and think, "Great, the tip is already included!" It is not! The coperto is a centuries-old tradition covering the bread, the tablecloth, and the seat itself, and it goes directly to the restaurant, not your waiter. While tipping isn't mandatory like in the US, if you loved the service, leaving a little extra cash on the table is highly appreciated by the hard-working staff!
2. Expecting disposable toilet seat covers in bars ๐งป๐ป If you walk into a typical Italian bar or restaurant bathroom expecting a neat dispenser of disposable paper toilet seat covers, you are in for a cultural shock. In fact, you will sometimes be lucky if you find an actual toilet seat! Be prepared to practice your "hovering" skills, and always carry a pack of travel tissues with you just in case.
3. Searching the hotel bathroom for a "washcloth" ๐งผ๐ง♀️ North American travelers, we know you love them, but you will almost never find a washcloth (that tiny square towel used for scrubbing in the shower) in an Italian hotel or B&B! You will find a face towel, a bath towel, and the famous bidet towel, but washcloths are simply not part of the Italian bathing culture. If you absolutely cannot shower without one, make sure to pack your own!
4. Slicing up your spaghetti with a knife ๐ช๐ Every time a blade touches long pasta, an Italian grandmother feels a sudden disturbance in the universe. Just twirl it with your fork!
5. Ordering a "Latte" and getting mad at the milk ๐ฅ๐ You ordered "latte." In Italian, that literally translates to milk. The cow did its job, the waiter did his job. Please don't blame us! (Ask for a Caffรจ Macchiato or Caffรจ Latte instead).
6. Pronouncing it "Broo-shetta" ๐ฅ๐ We know exactly what you are trying to order, and we will happily serve it with a smile. But deep down, the toasted bread knows its real name is Brus-KET-ta.
7. Searching for the elevator in a 14th-century hotel ๐งณ๐ฐ Leonardo da Vinci was busy painting the Mona Lisa when this building was constructed. He forgot to design a glass elevator for your 30-kilo suitcase.
8. Mixing seafood pasta with Parmesan cheese ๐ง๐ฆ The ocean and Parmigiano do not belong together. It’s a culinary law we protect fiercely.
9. Bragging that you "did Rome" in four hours ๐️⏱️ It took 3,000 years to build the Eternal City. The Colosseum would appreciate a little more of your time before you catch the next high-speed train!
10. Asking if we really eat pasta every single day ๐๐ Well, maybe not every single day... but if you ask an Italian mamma this question, she’s already boiling a pot of water before you even finish your sentence.
11. Throwing ice cubes into a glass of red wine ๐ง๐ท That beautiful Montepulciano survived the hot sun, the harvest, and years of aging in a wooden barrel, only to freeze in your glass. The wine didn't deserve this.
12. Ordering a cappuccino with your garlic seafood dinner ☕๐ฆ Milk and garlic are fighting a war in your stomach, and the waiter is trying very hard not to cry while frothing your milk. Cappuccino is for breakfast!
13. Calling every coffee an "Expresso" ๐☕ First, there is no 'X' in espresso. Second, we have ristretto, lungo, macchiato, marocchino... calling them all espresso is like calling every dog you see a Golden Retriever!
14. Being shocked by our "sweet" breakfasts ๐ฅ☕ We don't do eggs and bacon at 7 AM. Choosing between pistachio, chocolate, or cream inside your morning cornetto is the most critical decision of the Italian workday.
15. Using the ๐ค gesture for absolutely everything ๐ค๐ฃ️ This specific hand sign means "What on earth are you saying/doing?". Using it to tell the waiter the food is delicious is highly confusing for everyone involved!
16. Calling a masterpiece of Focaccia "pizza bread" ๐๐ The entire region of Liguria is currently drafting a formal letter of complaint about this.
17. Waiting for the check to arrive automatically ๐งพ⏳ You own that restaurant table for the night! If you don't wave and politely ask for "il conto," you might be sitting there until next Tuesday.
18. Pronouncing Gnocchi as "Guh-knock-ee" ๐ฅ The 'G' is resting. It has been silent for centuries. Let it enjoy its peaceful retirement.
19. Putting chicken on top of pasta ๐๐ Chicken is a beautiful second course. Pasta is a sacred first course. They have a long-distance relationship and should never meet on the same plate!
20. Concluding "Italian food is just okay" after only eating pizza ๐๐คท♂️ Italy has 20 regions, each with its own culinary universe of stews, truffles, risotto, and seafood. If you only ate Margherita for a week, we respectfully request a retrial!
21. Frantically searching for a Starbucks next to a local cafรฉ ☕๐ข The local barista pulling a perfect, 1-euro artisan espresso shot right next to you is holding back tears.
22. Asking for butter with your restaurant bread ๐ง๐ฅ We have some of the best extra virgin olive oil in the world. Pour the liquid gold on a plate and dip your bread in it!
23. Flying 10 hours to Italy to eat a Big Mac ๐✈️ You walked past fresh truffles, aged Parmigiano, and homemade ragรน to get to McDonald's. We aren't angry... just deeply, deeply confused.
