❌ 11 Things NOT to Do in Naples: Avoid the Traps Like a Local! ๐บ️
๐ Here are 11 things I'd think twice about, especially if you're visiting Naples for just a few days.
๐ 1. Queuing for 2+ Hours at "Viral" Pizzerias Yes, places like L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele or Sorbillo are iconic . But standing in line for hours? Naples is the undisputed capital of pizza. You can find life-changing, authentic pizza at places like Pizzeria Al 22, Vesi, or countless local spots without losing half your day in a queue.
๐ 2. Hop-On Hop-Off Tourist Buses They seem convenient, but Naples is a city meant to be explored on foot. The historic centre (Centro Storico) is a maze of narrow, vibrant alleys where buses simply cannot go. Plus, local traffic can slow you down. Walking is far more rewarding!
๐ 3. Trying to Visit Pompeii, Herculaneum, AND Vesuvius in One Day It sounds like a great idea on paper, but in reality, it's a recipe for pure exhaustion. These sites are massive, crowded, and fully exposed to the sun. Pick one or two, take your time, and actually absorb the incredible history.
๐ฟ 4. Showing up to the Veiled Christ (Cappella Sansevero) Without a Ticket Don't waste time walking there hoping to buy a ticket at the door. It is almost always sold out days (or weeks) in advance! If you don't have a pre-booked online ticket, skip the walk and plan ahead for next time.
๐ 5. Taking Taxis for Short Distances in the City Center Neapolitan traffic is legendary. If you're moving around the historic center, rely on your own two feet or take the spectacular Metro Line 1 (the art stations are an attraction in themselves!). Save the cars for private transfers to the Amalfi Coast.
๐ฑ 6. Chasing TikTok Street Food Queues Just because a specific street food stall has millions of views on social media doesn't mean it's the only good place for a "cuoppo" (fried food cone) or a folded pizza. The local, hidden friggitorie are often cheaper, faster, and much more authentic.
๐ช 7. Sitting Down for Coffee in Busy Tourist Squares In Naples, coffee is a fast, intense ritual. If you sit at a table in a major square, you'll pay a premium for service. Do as the locals do: stand at the bar, drink it in two sips, leave a small coin, and keep exploring!
๐️ 8. Shopping for International Brands on Via Toledo Via Toledo is a fantastic walking street, but do you really want to spend your limited time inside international chain stores you can find back home? Skip the chains and head to Via San Lorenzo , Via San Gregorio Armeno , Via San Sebastiano or Vicoletto San Domenico to discover authentic, handmade Neapolitan craftsmanship.
๐ 9. Eating at Restaurants with "Tourist Menus" or Photos on the Door Naples is a culinary paradise, but just like any major city, it has its traps. If a restaurant has a staff member outside trying to drag you in, or huge menus with faded photos of the food, just walk away! Skip the generic tourist meals and head to authentic local spots like Locanda del Gesรน Vecchio, Tandem Ragรน, Trattoria 53 or Taverna dell'Arte for the real Neapolitan flavors!
๐ฐ 10. Going to Castel dell'Ovo (For Now!) It’s a stunning landmark and the oldest castle in Naples, but it is currently closed to the public for long-term restoration. Walk along the Lungomare (promenade) for the beautiful views of the bay, but don't waste time trying to find an entrance.
☕ 11. Saying the Word "Espresso" at the Bar Skip ordering an "espresso"! When you step up to a counter, there is no need to use that word. Just ask for "un caffรจ." In Italy, simply saying "caffรจ" automatically means you will be served a perfectly brewed, intense shot of espresso exactly how it is meant to be enjoyed.
⏳ If your time in Naples is limited, don't spend it standing in unnecessary queues or rushing through experiences. Slow down, look around, and ennjoy the authentic Neapolitan vibe!
