⛏️ The Excavation: This amazing find was made during research on the Stabian baths by the Freie Universität Berlin, the University of Naples L’Orientale, and the University of Oxford.

🗣️ A Treasure Chest: As Culture Minister Dario Franceschini noted, the ongoing excavations continue to prove that Pompeii is an "authentic treasure chest of history and memory that fascinates the whole world."

🏚️ Seeking Shelter: Following the violent earthquake of 62 A.D., many buildings were abandoned. This brave little reptile wandered into the rubble of a decommissioned workshop, looking for a safe, soft spot.

🔍 A Rare Location: While tortoises have been discovered in Pompeii before (like in the beautiful gardens of the House of Julius Polybius), finding one in an abandoned shop rubble is very unique!

📏 Careful Rescue: Archaeologists removed the tortoise in three stages: documenting the 14 cm carapace, securing the internal skeleton and plastron (belly shell), and carefully transferring it to a lab for deep analysis.

💡 The Tragic Backstory: Experts identified her as a Testudo hermanni (Hermann's tortoise). Sadly, because she couldn't find a proper natural environment in the rubble to lay her single egg, she suffered from "dystocia" (egg retention).

💔 A Peaceful End: Experts believe this condition was fatal. She passed away peacefully and was covered by dirt from construction workers rebuilding the city—years before Mount Vesuvius ever erupted in 79 A.D.!
