FIRST THREE DAYS ITINERARY IN NAPLES + AIRBNB STAY OLD TOWN
Three perfect days in Naples concentrated only In the city center, putting aside the surrounding area for the following days or for a future visit .
.
- Day one : Historic center ( centro storico )
- Day two : Spanish quarter + waterfront + Chiaia district
- Day three : Vomero hill + charterhouse of San Martino and Castel Sant'Elmo + Floridiana Park ( or pompeii ruins or food tour )
(If you find you have a bit of extra time, you can spend the day visiting Mt. Vesuvius and the archaeological ruins of Pompeii
.
DAY ONE : The Old Town ( Centro Storico)
.
Full of historic buildings , churches, and museums, the city's old town is best explored on foot... wander the narrow lanes and tiny squares, admire the picturesquely Baroque facades, and be surprised and delighted with the hidden piazzas and courtyards.
.
.To visit Naples' historic center in one day, we suggest following this route:
1) THE CHURCH OF SANTA CHIARA : THE SANCTUARY OF THE ANGEVIN ( 14 th)
- Any respectable tourist, Neapolitan or foreigner, has traveled Via Benedetto Croce ( well know by local people as SPACCANAPOLI) at least once in search of the typical Neapolitan atmosphere. Among the various monuments that overlook the famous Piazza and streets , it is located the fascinating church of Santa Chiara, built by the Angevins as a family shrine at the beginning of the 14th century. The majestic Gothic structure houses a series of tombs from the French dynasty.
.
TIP : take time to visit the ancient cloister inside the church "Chiostro di Santa Chiara" ticket on the spot ( no queue ,The cloister is open daily from 9:30AM to 5:30PM)
one of the most beautiful among the many "Neapolitan cloisters", where the majolica decorated by Giuseppe and Donato Massa, represent a unicum of its kind.
.
2) THE CHURCH OF SAN DOMENICO MAGGIORE (14th)
- The Monastery of San Domenico Maggiore is an unmissable stop of the historic center of Naples. The church dominates the homonymous square as a majestic queen internally dressed in gold Baroque, covering its original Gothic skin. The convent, instead is on the sidelines, hidding behind the “vico san domenico ” its accesses confluents in the verdant cloister of San Domenico
.
Both the church and the convent can be visited for free. They preserve one of the most important religious complex in the city, a home for Dominican friars, where lived important personalities such as Thomas Aquinas and Giordano Bruno, and where you can admire astonishing works of high esteem artists such as Cavallini and Solimena.
.
3) THE CHAPEL OF SAN SEVERO and THE VEILED CHRIST - 16th - ( CRISTO VELATO)
- This masterpiece of 18th-century sculpture is located in the Sansevero Chapel not far from Piazza San Domenico Maggiore. i recommend avoiding the most crowded midday hours or booking your ticket in advance.
.
TIP : pre-book your ticket - official San Severo Chapel web page , on line ticket : https://ticket.museosansevero.it/
.
4) VIA TRIBUNALI AND VIA SAN GREGORIO ARMENO + PIZZA STOP
- Continue your walking tour of the historic center during your short break in Naples by strolling down the striking Via dei Tribunali, one of the main thoroughfares in Naples lined with shops, pizzerias, and trattorias. This vibrant stretch of road crowded with street vendors . It preserve the authentic spirit of the city.
.
Most famous pizzerias in the historic center are located along Via dei Tribunali, incuding Sorbillo , Di Matteo , la Figlia del Presidente ( Via del Grande archivio 24 ) The pizza is excellent , whatever choice you make . A bit farther up towards Forcella, you can stop at Da Michele, perhaps the most famous pizzeria ( was the set film for EAT PRAY AND LOVE with J. Roberts ) . Keep in mind that there is always a big line, you will need to go inside ,leave your name for the waiting list and wait outside your turn . when your table is ready they call your name "loud voice" .
.
SAN GREGORIO ARMENO and the "nativity scene "artisans
- Crossing Via Tribunali at the right angle of piazza San Gaetano, you can find Via San Gregorio Armeno is a must-see when in Naples for a short break. This short and narrow lane is home to the famed nativity scene artisans of Via San Gregorio Armeno. The workshops are functioning and open to business all year round with their show- stands in the tiny alleys.
TIP : if you have time visit the church of San Gregorio Armeno 1579 ( free entry , inside the miraculous remains of Santa Patrizia the second patron of Naples....the mystery of her blood liquefaction. It occurs every week....... )
.
5)THE CATHEDRAL OF NAPLES , 14th (DUOMO DI NAPOLI) AND THE ROYAL CHAPEL OF SAN GENNARO ( a symbol of the city's most beloved religious traditions) free entry
.
TIP : if you have time visit the treasure of san gennaro , it flanks the cathedral - official web site : https://tesorosangennaro.it/
.
6) CATACOMBS OF SAN GAUDIOSO AND SAN GENNARO 305 A.D.
- The catacombs of San Gaudioso and San Gennaro are underground cemeteries, the highest expression of Christianity in Naples. They take their name from the saint who was buried there in 305 AD, transforming the catacombs in a place of worship in the city.
.
TIP : entrance is in the Piazza Sanità 14 (near the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità)
With the same ticket one you also have the opportunity to see the catacombs of San Gennaro. Tours are available in English / Italian. The tour starts every hour from 10am to 5pm ( ticket on the spot) - Official website : https://catacombedinapoli.it/it/luoghi/catacombe-di-san-gaudioso-napoli/
.
DAY TWO : Castel Nuovo + Quartieri Spagnoli + Piazza del Plebiscito and the royal palace + seafront and Castell dell'ovo ( strolling around Chiaia district)
.
1) CASTEL NUOVO 13th ( Maschio Angioino)
- The first stop is at Castel Nuovo, known in Naples as the Maschio Angioino (open from 8:30AM to 6:30PM daily except Sunday), a medieval defensive castle that once sat directly on the waterfront. Watchtowers, crenelated ramparts, and majestic halls take you back in time; peer down at the vast excavation directly below the castle that is bringing to light an ancient Roman port.
.
2) QUARTIERI SPAGNOLI 16th (spanish neighborhood)
. The Quartieri Spagnoli were created in the 16th century to house the Spanish garrisons (hence the name) by the spanish ruler Don Pedro da Toledo . Have been painted for many years as a place to avoid, one of the most dangerous areas of Naples. Fortunately, in recent years, the Quartieri Spagnoli have been re-evaluated and have become one of the main tourist attractions of the city, a place made of narrow alleys, clothes hanging in the sun, small taverns, elements that best represent the soul of Naples and the Neapolitans. Weave through its warren of narrow lanes .
.
TIP : If you are lucky try to reserve a table , at TRATTORIA ANTICA CAPRI try the pasta fagioli, with seafood ( pasta + beans and seafood)
Trattoria antica Capri
Address : Via Speranzella, 110, 80132 Napoli NA
.
3) PIAZZA DEL PLEBISCITO and the ROYAL PALACE ( palazzo reale)
- Piazza del Plebiscito : is the neoclassical architecture of the Church of San Francesco di Paola , a popular venue for weddings among Neapolitans.
.
- Royal palace and San Carlo Opera House
Directly opposite, is visible Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace) occupies an entire side of the square. Once Residence of the city's Spanish rulers. From 1734 to the unification of Italy in the mid-1800s, this Bourbon palace is home to opulent apartments, hanging gardens, precious artworks, and breathtaking halls. The legendary San Carlo Opera House, one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world, is also part of the royal complex.
.
TIP : Visit the Royal Palace and San Carlo Opera House
(open daily from 9AM to 7PM, closed Wednesdays. Tickets on the spot ) - Official website : https://palazzorealedinapoli.org/
.
4) WATERFRONT + CASTEL DELL'OVO 12th AND BORGO MARINARI
- Begin your walk from the picturesque FONTANA DEL GIGANTE ( in front of hotel excelsior) and admire the views of Mt. Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples before continuing on to visit one of the most important landmark along the waterfront of Naples , the castell dell'ovo .
- Castel dell'Ovo is a fortress originally built by the Normans, though it was modified during the subsequent Angevin and Aragon dynasties.
(According to a popular local legend, the name Castel dell'Ovo, or Egg Castle, comes from a magical egg placed inside a cage and hidden inside the castle by the Roman poet Virgil. The egg is said to keep the castle standing with its powers; if the egg were to break, there would be catastrophic consequences for the fortress and all of Naples.)
.
Castel dell'Ovo stands on the historic islet of Megaride, today connected to the mainland with a charming stone-bridge and crowded with the bars and restaurants of Borgo Marinari. This is the perfect spot for a romantic walk or lunch/dinner to base of fish , the traditional Neapolitan dishes.
.
TIP : For an authentic dish of spaghetti con le vongole ( clams) , i recommend a' zi teresa restaurant in the heart of Borgo Marinari, a rustic family-run trattoria.
.
Visiting Castel dell'Ovo
Hours: open daily from 9AM to 7:30PM (6:30 in winter). Sundays from 9AM to 2PM (1PM in winter). Free entrance
TIP : take some pic from castel dell' ovo upper terrace the view is superb.
.
5 "relaxing") STROLLING AROUND THE ELEGANT DISTRICT OF CHIAIA
.
Thanks to its central position, Chiaia's posh neighbourhood has become a popular destination not only among tourists, but also among those who, taking advantage of their own free time, want to do a walking tour among all its exclusive boutiques and shops. Walk from Toledo Street then via chiaia and finish up to via Dei Mille , they full of such interesting and historical buildings like a triumphal arch-shaped bridge with a lift on the inside. Following, the road leads to some other streets like via Filangieri , via Cavallerizza a Chiaia and vicoletto Belledonne a chiaia where the nightlife takes place, whether it is summer or winter.
.
- TIP : chiaia is full of elegant bars and bistrot where you can relax having an aperitif / take smt to eat/drink etc. I recommend Magnolia
.
MAGNOLIA (Restaurant Lounge Bar Thermae & Relais)

.
- DAY THREE PLAN A - VOMERO HILL

We can now reach the end of our tour on the top of the Vomero hill, which we will reach by crossing the popular Piazza Vanvitelli. This square is the heart of the neighborhood and comes alive even more in the evening and on weekends. In addition to the metro, close by there are also the three funiculars that connect the area with the center or with Chiaia district.
.
From here begins the steepest climb which not only leads to two of the most important monuments of Naples, but is also dotted with beautiful Art Nouveau buildings .
.
2) Castel Sant'Elmo 13th.
Catel Sant'Elmo is an imposing medieval building built on the remains of an even more ancient church. Today it's a museum, but it also hosts cultural events.
TIP : once out of the castel enjoy the promontory with a fabulous view of the entire city it is MAGIC ( you can see the spaccanapoli line from here )
.
3) the Certosa di San Martino 14th
It is a monastery that seems more like a palace. The certosa, or charter house, had been started in 1325, but by the 18th century. The sacristy leads into the Cappella del Tesoro, with Luca Giordano's ceiling fresco of Judith holding aloft Holofernes's head and paintings by Jusepe de Ribera (the Pietà over the altar is one of his masterpieces) the carriages museum and many other work of art
.
4) Floridiana Park 19th
Villa Floridiana and the Duca di Martina Ceramic Museum. Many people come to this unique park which has a stunning view of the gulf. Situated in the middle of the Vomero hill, this villa was the summerhouse of the duchess of Floridia, Lucia Migliaccio, wife of King Ferdinand of Bourbon of the kingdom of the two Sicilies.
TIP : To finish your tour , take a stroll around the vomero hill
the main /shopping streets are

Where to Stay "BASE IN POSITANO OR AMALFI"
- Since you need to make the most of your time, I suggest choosing a hotel in Positano or Amalfi so that you can be based in the most famous and lively villages along the coast, with easy public transportation connections (SITA BUS) to the other destinations along the coastline and the islands . If you are looking for budget accommodations, try the village of MAIORI AND MINORI where there are many AIRBNB , B&Bs , VRBO apartments that are less expensive but still very close to Amalfi.
.
GETTING AROUND THE AMALFI COAST
- The easiest way to get around along the coast is by ferry: there are routes that run between Amalfi, Positano, Salerno, and the island of Capri. Otherwise, there are Sita public buses that run the length of the coast. An excellent alternative is to rent a scooter, so you have all the freedom you want to get around without having to deal with traffic jams and parking. i do not suggest driving, especially during high season.

After 3 days of Amalfi coast now we return to Napoli, drop your luggage at your AIRBNB and take the ferry to CAPRI ( at molo beverello , ticket on the spot )
7th day - ONE DAY ITINERARY ON CAPRI ( the perfect one day Itinerary)
.
- Tips for visiting Capri in one day on your own
- 9:00 a.m. - Capri boat tour and Blue Grotto
- 11:30 a.m.- Chairlift to the top of Mount Solaro
- 12:30 p.m. - Villa San Michele
- 3:00 p.m. - In and around Capri's Piazzetta
- 5:00 p.m. - Return to port
- During the months of July and August, the heat and crowds can be oppressive and you may find this day trip to Capri itinerary too strenuous. An alternative is to choose the most interesting sights and activities ahead of time and don't try to fit them all into one day. On the warmest summer days, the best option is to visit the Piazzetta early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and spend the rest of the day out on the water or at the beach.
.
1) 9:00 am - BOAT TOUR
Try to arrive on Capri as early as possible and head first to the private jetty in Marina Grande, which is the departure point for boat tours to the Blue Grotto (on the same dock where most ferries from the mainland arrive). Purchase a ticket for the Capri boat tour including a visit to the Blue Grotto.
You can take either the complete circle tour, which includes the thrill of sailing through the arch in the dramatic Faraglioni rock formations, or the shorter tour, which only sails as far as the Blue Grotto and back. I suggest you opt for the full circle tour!
.
- Capri boat tour and visit to the Blue Grotto
- Duration: about 2 hours
- Cost: about 23 euros
- Entrance to Grotto: 18 euros
.
- Blue grotto Tip
After visiting the Blue Grotto, ask the skipper to let you off at the stairs next to the grotto instead of taking the boat back to Marina Grande. Climb the stairs to the top and take the bus to Anacapri so you don't waste time in the long line at the bus terminal in Marina Grande.
.
2) 11:30 am - MONTE SOLARO
Upon your return to Marina Grande, board a bus to Anacapri (a 20 minute ride). From here, take the chairlift to the summit of Monte Solaro.
.
Monte Solaro Chairlift
- Duration: 12 minutes
- Cost: about 12 euros round-trip
- Opening hours: March - October: 9:30 am - 5:30 pm; November -
- February: 10:30 am - 3:00 pm
.
From the summit of Monte Solaro you can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of the Bays of Naples and Salerno. Afterwards you can descend the mountain slope by chairlift or on foot. If you decide to walk (around 30 minutes on foot), take a momento to visit the Cetrella Hermitage.
.
12:30 pm - VILLA SAN MICHELE
Your day trip to Capri has probably made you work up an appetite by now, so you can either stop for lunch in one of Anacapri's restaurants or grab a quick snack and head straight to Villa San Michele. The villa was originally a private residence and is now a museum open to the public. It was formerly the home of 19th-century Swedish writer and physician Axel Munthe and it boasts one of the island's most panoramic views.
.
Villa San Michele
- Entrance: around 10 euros
- Opening hours: from 09:00 am until 1 hour before sunset
.
3) 3:00 pm - PIAZZETTA
Take a bus to back down to Capri. Make sure you stop for a coffee or a refreshing drink in the bustling Piazzetta.
.
- drink prices in the Piazzetta
An espresso with table service in the Piazzetta costs around 6-7 euros; a glass of wine or beer costs around 15 euros.
.
After a drink in the Piazzetta, stroll down Via Camerelle, famous for its luxury shops and designer fashion boutiques. When you've had your fill of window shopping, continue along Via Tragara until you reach the breathtaking scenic overlook facing the Faraglioni rock formations.
.
4) STOP TO TAKE A FEW PHOTOS OF THE FARAGLIONI
- then turn back along Via Tragara, retracing your steps.
Instead of continuing on Via Camerelle, however, take the road uphill on the right (Via Padre Reginaldo Giuliano) until you come out on Via Fuorlovaldo and Via Le Botteghe. Once you find yourself in the Piazzetta, you can get back down to the port with the funicular and hop on a hydrofoil back to the mainland—your day trip to Capri is complete!
