.
If you are planning a week on the Amalfi Coast and want to see all the highlights during your stay, here is the itinerary for an unforgettable vacation full of breathtaking views, excellent food, and plenty of time to relax!
.
A week in Positano and the Amalfi Coast is the ideal amount of time to take in the highlights along the coastline and also visit a few nearby A-list sights. For a truly special holiday in Positano, i also recommend spending a day at sea via an Amalfi Coast boat tour, relaxing on the beach for a few hours, and spending some time browsing the local artisan workshops and boutiques. And, of course, no Italian vacation would be complete without some incredible meals!
.
1) POSITANO
The perfect itinerary for a week on the Amalfi Coast begins in Positano, one of the most famous and spectacular towns along the coastline. One day is enough to soak in its unique atmosphere, explore the village center, and do some shopping in its famed boutiques. You can also sunbathe and swim at one of the LOCAL BEACHES . Start with a stroll through the village center to admire the most important sights in Positano, including the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the Roman Villa, an extraordinary ancient archaeological site known as "the Pompeii of the Amalfi Coast".
.
LOCAL BEST BEACHES IN POSITANO ( laurito + Arienzo + Marina Grande + Fornillo )
.
LAURITO BEACH
- Positano's Laurito beach is a tiny little beach, which can reached via a flight of steps which starts in the small square opposite Hotel San Pietro. The name of the beach derives from the many laurels growing in the area. Laurito is divided into a free beach and a private beach, the latter belonging to a small hotel, and has two casual beach restaurants.
.
From the pier at Positano's Spiaggia Grande beach, small boats depart about every 30 minutes for the Da Adolfo beachfront restaurant...you can recognize them by the red fish flag waving from the mast. Note that reservations are more or less required to either dine or simply relax on a sun lounger here.

.
ARIENZO BEACH
-The Arienzo beach is often called the 300 steps beach, because of the impressive number of steps visitors need to climb down to reach it. On their way down towards the sea, holidaymakers can catch glimpses of the gardens of some of the Amalfi Coast's most luxurious villas, including one which once belonged to Franco Zeffirellli. Facing the south west, the beach enjoys the sun longer than any other in Positano. The beach is divided into private and free areas.
- HOW TO GET TO LAURITO AND ARIENZO BEACH BY PUBLIC BUS
Sita buses stop both at Laurito and Arienzo.
.
MARINA GRANDE BEACH
- Ideal picture postcard material, Positano's main beach is one of the liveliest and most cosmopolitan of all those on the Amalfi Coast. Along the large, three hundred meter long beach, which lies almost directly opposite the archipelago of Li Galli, there is a string of restaurants and bars and a famous discotheque (Music On the Rocks). Its easy to see why the beach has become the focus of the town's social life, where the locals come to mingle with the world's celebrities and tourists. The beach has two bathing establishments and a free area, from where excursions along the coast and shuttle boats to the nearby bays depart.
.
FORNILLO BEACH
- Via a romantic walk, between the sea and the cliffs, beginning at Positano harbor, holidaymakers come to Fornillo beach: a well-established favorite amongst those searching for a more peaceful beach than that of Marina Grande. This said, given the vicinity to the center of Positano, during summer weekends even Fornillo can be crowded with sun worshippers.
.
HOW TO GET TO THE MARINA GRANDE AND FORNILLO BEACHES
By public transport: Sita buses and, in the summer, all of the region's major boat companies.
.
2) AMALFI
No week vacation on the Amalfi Coast is complete without visiting the historic maritime power for which the coastline is named: the spectacular port town of Amalfi, which still attracts visitors from across the world.
.
AMALFI THE COASTAL WARRIOR QUEEN
- Italy's oldest maritime republic and symbol of the Amalfi Coast, Amalfi continues to enchant visitors just as it did in the days of the Grand Tour.
.
Just over three square kilometers of devastatingly beautiful scenery at the mouth of the Valle dei Mulini: this is Amalfi, a town that opens like a fan towards the sea, sheltered from behind by the steep slopes of the Monti Lattari.
.
Amalfi's ancient Roman origins are evident from a number of ruins, including those of a nymphaeum dating back to the reign of Emperor Tiberius.
.
Amalfi is the oldest of Italy's four major Maritime Republics and prospered for a full three centuries under the Normans, Longobards, and even the Saracens.
.
Its decline began in 1137 when it was defeated and pillaged by the rival republic of Pisa.
.
""For the people of Amalfi, the day they enter Paradise will be a day much like any other because for them paradise is already here on earth, right on their doorstep."
(Inscription on the gates to the town)
.
HISTORY OF AMALFI TOWN
The history of Amalfi has been shaped by the town's extensive commercial relations throughout the Mediterranean and the great technical and scientific prowess of its citizens, such as the Amalfi-born Flavio Gioia, attributed with the invention of the nautical compass.
.
Then there are the Tavole Amalfitane, which for centuries represented the maritime code in the Mediterranean.
.
When, in the mid-1800s, Prince Ferdinand of Bourbon built the coastal road between Vietri sul Mare and Positano, allowing easier access to this beautiful stretch of Italian coast, the town's mild climate and beautiful architecture made Amalfi an obligatory stop on the Grand Tour.
.
Today, traveling to Amalfi over land or sea is still an unforgettable experience.
.
Quintessentially Mediterranean, Amalfi's townscape is comprised of a cluster of little white houses interspersed with narrow alleyways and shady porticoes. It's guarded by watchtowers such as the Torre Saracena, close to the Convent of San Francesco.
.
THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN AMALFI TOWN
(The Amalfi cathedral + The ancient arsenals + The paper museum + Limoncello tasting )
.
THE AMALFI CATHEDRAL AND THE ANCIENT ARSENALS
- The town's main landmark is the Duomo di SANT'ANDREA , or cathedral. Begun in the 9th century and altered over time with Arab-Norman, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements, the church is preceded by an impressive flight of 62 steps and towers over Amalfi's main piazza.
.
The multi-colored facade was completely rebuilt in the 19th century after the original collapsed. Work on the majolica-faced bell tower was completed in 1276. The interior is a magnificent display of Italian baroque art and silver masonry.
.
A bronze statue of Sant Andrea dominates the altar and protects the reliquary urn associated with the miraculous appearance of the manna, which the people of Amalfi commemorate each November 27th.
.
From inside the cathedral, visitors gain access to the first Duomo of Amalfi, now called the Basilica del Crocifisso, and to the splendid Moorish-style Cloister of Paradise (Chiostro del Paradiso). The cloister was built in the 13th century as a cemetery where the town's most illustrious citizens were laid to rest.
.
Beware: if you are superstitious, don't climb up the steps of this storied Amalfi church hand-in-hand with your loved one! According to local legend, couples who do so will never get married.
.
Beyond the Piazza del Duomo, at the center of which the 18th-century Fontana del Popolo takes pride of place, visitors reach what remains of the ancient arsenals where the marine republic's warships were once constructed.
.
Just a few steps away there is the pretty little Piazzetta dei Dogi, lined with traditional shops.
.
In the vicinity of what was once called the Vallenula—the old western gateway to the city—is the 10th-century Church of San Biagio, which is famous for its exquisite late 18th-century majolica floor.
.
No visit to Amalfi can be considered complete without having enjoyed a stroll through the town's labyrinth of little lanes and alleyways and a trip to the Paper Museum at Via delle Cartiere 24 in the historic Cartiera Milano.
.

The production of hand-crafted paper, known as bambagina, is one of the oldest of Amalfi's traditions and today remains part of the town's culture and identity.
.
Those looking to purchase a few sheaves of the paper can do so in the 500-year-old Cartiera Amatuda, close to the Canneto river in the Valle dei Mulini.

HAVE EXTRA TIME ?
If you are looking to fill up some time before leaving Amalfi, I suggest taking a stroll through the nearby village of ATRANI , the tiny hamlet set on the cliffside just outside Amalfi. There is an excellent beach in Atrani that is very popular with families.
.
ATRANI
"The Dutch artist Escher came to the Amalfi Coast in 1923 and immediately fell head over heels in love with Atrani, immortalizing the game of light and shadow played amidst its narrow alleyways in a great number of his artworks."
.
- Amalfi's twin appears like an enchanting Italian nativity scene made up of a maze of little alleyways, narrow flights of steps, and houses clinging to the rocks directly over the Mediterranean Sea.
.
A fishing village, the history of which is inextricably linked to that of its illustrious neighbor, Amalfi, and which has conserved its ancient medieval structure, comprised of a cascade of houses interspersed with steep flights of steps, covered passageways, and tiny gardens, all incredibly intact. Clinging to the cliff face, directly above the sea, at the mouth of the Valle del Dragone, Atrani is the smallest town in the whole of Southern Italy.
.
WHAT TO DO IN ATRANI
- Today, the famed Amalfitana" coast road has formed a barrier between the town and the sea, and those wishing to reach the water's edge have to use one of the passageways such as that in Piazza Umberto I, originally constructed as a shelter for boats during high tide and which now appears like the backstage of a theater facing the sea. The Church of San Salvatore de' Birecto, where the coronation of the Doges of the Republic of Amalfi once took place, is located here.
.
Another place to visit, if only for its incredibly panoramic position, is the sparkling majolica-domed Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena which dominates the entire eastern side of the town with its baroque-style facade and soaring bell tower.
.
Close to the church is the Grotta di Masaniello. According to the local legend, the revolutionist from Naples sought refuge in this cave, which is near to his maternal home. Enjoying a fabulous view over the whole of Atrani, the 11th-century Church of Santa Maria del Bando, set against the rocks beneath the Torre dello Zito, is particularly enchanting.
.
TRADITIONAL FESTIVALS IN ATRANI
- Santa Maddalena (Mary Magdalene), patron saint of Atrani (22 July)
- Reenactment of the Ducal wedding (April)
- Sagra del pesce azzurro (August)
.
WHAT TO EAT IN ATRANI
Fresh fish is a major protagonist in almost all of Atrani's gastronomic delicacies, though there are dishes which are not fish-based like sarchiapone, a marrow stuffed with meat and cheese cooked in tomato sauce, the custard-and-cherry-filled pasticciotto, and the wickedly sweet cassata atranese.
.
- OTHER TASTY TREATS :
- Scialatielli alle vongole veraci
- Colatura di alici
- Involtini di mozzarella in foglia di limone
- Delizia al limoncello

3) RAVELLO
The third day of your week in Positano and surroundings can be spent taking in one of the gems on the Amalfi Coast: the delightful city of Ravello set on the cliffside above Minori and Amalfi and offering some of the most unforgettable views of the coastline. Visit the town's historic gardens and scenic overlooks and soak in the quiet, romantic atmosphere of this beautiful spot.
.
The small village of Ravello is home to a number of architectural treasures, including the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta and the gardens of Villa Cimbrone, famed for the spectacular “Infinity Terrace”. The top sight is Villa Rufolo, which has been drawing visitors to its panoramic terrace for centuries. Villa Rufolo captivated the composer Wagner, who became enamored with Ravello; the town is still known as the City of Music.
.
RAVELLO'S MUSIC FESTIVAL
Music lovers won't want to miss the annual Ravello Festival, held each summer in the beautiful Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer and other locations scattered across town. The highlight of the festival is the sunrise concert set on the cliffside overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

.
How long does it take to visit Ravello?
Ravello is a small city, but has many places to visit. If you wish to visit Villa Cimbrone, Villa Rufolo and the Duomo, you should allow at least 4-5 hours. You can combine it with a visit to Amalfi to make for a full day, since they're only 10 minutes apart by bus.
.
4) CAPRI
Positano and the Amalfi Coast are the perfect place to set off for a day trip to Capri, the most famous and storied island in the Bay of Naples.
.
There are a number of options for visiting Capri from the Amalfi Coast. The easiest way is by hopping on a scheduled ferry from Positano, keeping in mind that these routes only run in the summer season, beginning around Easter.
.
Another option for visiting the island is joining a tour from Positano to Capri that generally includes a sail around the island and a stop on land to explore on your own.
.
The third option for your day trip from Positano or another town on the Amalfi Coast to Capri is booking a private boat tour with skipper. This option gives you the most flexibility and freedom to set your own pace and itinerary, deciding when and where to stop to swim or dock on land. A private boat tour is guaranteed to be a highlight of your holiday on the Amalfi Coast and lets you fully appreciate the beauty of Capri's magnificent coastline.

5) AMALFI COAST BOAT TOUR
Today you can escape the crowds and traffic on the Amalfi Coast to admire the stunning coastline by sea on a boat tour. This is a must for any week in Positano and the Amalfi Coast and there are endless options for boat tours to fit any travel style, budget, and group.
.
Top choices include joining a small-group boat tour or booking a private boat tour with skipper, which can be the best option if you are traveling with a group of friends or a large family. If you have experience at sea, you can rent a small rubber dinghy or traditional gozzo boat to navigate on your own. Regardless, I suggest scheduling an entire day on the water if you can, so you'll have ample time to explore the crystalline coves and sea caves and even stop to stroll through the villages along the coastline or have lunch at a beachfront restaurant. If you have limited time, you can opt for a shorter boat tour or a romantic sunset cocktail sail.
