Naples and the Evil Eye , the approach of the Neapolitans with superstition πŸŒΆ️ πŸ€˜πŸ§²πŸ’€
The great Eduardo ( neapolitan playwright ) used to say "To be superstitious is to be ignorant, but not to be ignorant brings bad luck." or “it’s not true but I believe it”
These sentences , more than all summarizes the approach of the Neapolitans with superstition. The Neapolitan loves to live life, is cheerful, sunny, lover of company but also has a deep respect for everything that can have a positive or negative influence on people or things.
No city in the world has so many legends, stories and rituals about superstition as Naples: from Munaciello (spirit present in houses portrayed with hump and franciscan habit with beneficial or evil behavior) to the evil eye (popular belief that people’s eyes can have negative effects)

✅ The negative events to avoid the evil eye
1) table superstitions (do not overturn the bread, do not cross the forks in the pot, do not pass the salt in the hands of another diner, do not spill the oil on the ground)
2) Do not break a mirror (7 years of misfortunes)
3) Do not go under a ladder
4) Do not cross the road in the presence of a black cat.
5) Do not make any major decisions on friday 17th (17 is considered unlucky, and when it comes to Friday the 17th, some would even call it “un giorno nero" (a black day).
But is there a way to fight the evil eye (for those who believe it obviously)?
The Neapolitan people, always gifted with great imagination , they made up different remedies to fight the negative influences.

✅Best remedies to fight the evil eye (malocchio) in Naples
1) THE RED HORN - The King and most important amulet against the evil eye is the "red horn" CURNICIELLO
Perhaps it is the most famous, even symbolically, as tradition dictates , the classic horn from the characteristic red color o coral, should be given as a gift in order to fully fulfill its function. Specifically, the giver should prick the palm of the hand Of those who received it with the tip of the horn , "Only after this RITUAL the horn has been activated" . From this moment on the "corno" can do his job properly .
2) THE SIGN OF THE HORNS exclaiming sciΓ² sciΓ² (Tradition holds that the sign of the horns protects from negative energy)
3) THROWING SALT.....against the evil eye
4) THE UNCHBACK - touching a hunchback can be valid systems.
5) TOUCHING OR RUBBING YOUR GENITALS (Not really from etiquette......)
6) THE HORSESHOE - caressing a horseshoe

Where you can buy the red horn "curniciello" ?
Via San Gregorio Armeno ( the cribs street)

In short, for a true Neapolitan, superstition is something that involves everything, people, animals, objects , body parts . It is so intrinsic in our way of life that we hardly notice it.

F.A.Q. 🌢️πŸ§™πŸ½‍♂️πŸ‘‡

🌢️The twisted  shape : why it is twisted ?
The shape is very important, the tradition wants it to be as twisted as possible  this is to symbolize life, which is never flat or easy, but rather leads us to overcome obstacles and setbacks that make the achievement of the goals even more satisfying, and to fully enjoy the best life situation achieved. So the horn must end with a magnificent tip.

πŸ”΄The color : why is it red ?
Even color can not be any color but it must be red, this is due to the fact that red is the color of blood and in this case red coral is the most suitable material because its ramifications are reminiscent of the ramifications of the blood system.

🌢️Why you should not buy the red horn ?
A rule that should not be underestimated is that the horn  must be given away and not bought, this simply because it is thought that luck in general can not be bought but must come as a gift for itself.

πŸ›️Once the red horn had a Phallic shape ..... is that true ?
The phallic shape evolved into the horn amulet, known as the cornicello, due to a shift in symbolism and the influence of Catholic traditions, especially in Southern Italy. The phallus was a pagan symbol of fertility and good luck, but the horn became a replacement to protect against the evil eye.

🀘🏼Where can i put the red horn to make it  efficient ?
In addition to being worn for personal protection, it can and must also be used to protect places such as: the home, the car, work and if inserted into the wallet it is also an auspice of wealth and health.

🀘🏼If it breaks ?
Don't panic: The breaking of the horn is not a bad omen, but rather a sign that it worked to protect you from something negative, like the "evil eye".Neapolitan traditions suggest burying the broken horn in the ground (at  your home /garden /plants )  as a way to discard the absorbed negative energy.

πŸ§™πŸΌWhat is the correct ritual  to activate the red horn and make it work?
To activate a Red Horn (cornicello), the giver should use the horn's tip to prick the recipient's left palm, a ritual that connects the two. The recipient should then open their palm and say.....the right latin words to complete the activation.
But this is a secret........
